As part of the Affordable Care Act, beginning in 2014 all Americans will be required to carry health insurance—whether you can afford it or not. If you can't afford heath insurance—or choose not to have it—you'll be subject to a penalty. But in 2014, the penalty for a single adult is only $95 or 1% of your income (whichever is greater).
Here's how the numbers work out for a single adult:
|Annual Income||Approx. Penalty|
Why pay thousands for coverage? Take the penalty. But you should still have low cost accident and critical care coverage in case of an emergency.Take the Penalty +
The penalty may not be for everyone. If you need more from your health insurance plan, get a quote to find out what options are available to you, and avoid the penalty.Avoid the Penalty
* If applicable, the penalty will be deducted from your income tax refund.
